The hacker from the Poly Network heist, now known as Mr. White Hat, returns nearly the entire remainder of the $611m missing money. That is all except the $33 million frozen by Tether (USDT). This comes just a day after Mr. White Hat returned a substantial amount of the initial stolen tokens, via several transactions.
More specifically, he decided to give back $258m of the missing tokens in several different cryptocurrencies.
In the latest transaction, he returned the remaining $230m, also in various cryptocurrencies. More specifically in Ethereum, Wrapped Bitcoin, US Digital Coin and Ethereum. This was done in a multi-signature wallet, with both Mr. White Hat and the Poly team in control of the transaction.
Consequently, that concludes the return of almost the entire amount of the initial $611m. That is without taking into account the frozen $33m from Tether.
Poly Network confirms these news via their latest Twitter statement:
Moreover, it is exactly due to the return of the funds that the hacker now bears the Mr. White Hat nickname. Additionally, Poly Network reveals that they will stay in touch with Mr. White Hat until they receive the final key.
To support these claims, the hacker states that the attack on Poly was simply just ‘for fun’. And that he, the hacker, returns the $611m to Poly as a sign of good gesture. Additionally, he discloses that the purpose of the attack was to point out the bugs in the Poly Network platform. Thus, preventing a real attack on the Poly exchange in the future.
As a result, Poly Network expressed their gratitude towards Mr. White Hat for exposing the bug in their platform. Additionally, Poly Network offers even $500.000 to the hacker and his assistance. In addition, the comapny will be pressing no charges whatsoever.
Consequently, Poly Network also states that they are currently preparing for unfreezing the $33m in USDT. Specifically, they intend to negotiate the release of the funds, which are currently in the wallet of Mr. White Hat.
