NASA NFTs Are Out Of The Picture

The leading space agency in the world, NASA, reveals that they are against the use of their images and logos for creating non-fungible tokens (NFTs).

In general, NASA allows for the free use of its videos and images, without enforcing the copyrights that the agency is entitled to. Especially when the subject in question is for educational and informative purposes.

However, while NASA allows free use and distribution of its media content, the US government agency doesn’t allow the use of its logos. In fact, the logos of the agency are protected with copyrights, and as such require prior approval of NASA if anyone else wishes to use them.

And it seems like NASA shares the same views when it comes to NFTs as well. In particular, the government space agency reveals that they disapprove of tokenizing their logos into non-fungible tokens, especially if it to serve the purpose of being a digital asset.

Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs) are, in essence, digital tokens owned by someone as a ‘one of a kind’ digital asset. NASA does not wish for its images to be used for these purposes. It is unlawful to falsely claim copyright or other rights in NASA material.NASA | Official Statement
Legal Background

Furthermore, NASA says that using the logos of the agency for NFTs merchandising purposes is against its guidelines. According to the official guidelines of all government agencies in the United States, it is forbidden to endorse products or merchandise anything in relation to underwear, tobacco, food, the adult industry, alcohol, and of course, technology.

NASA is not approving any merchandising applications involving Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs), as they are not consistent with the categories of products the Agency is approved to merchandise.NASA | Official Statement

Interestingly, NASA is not a total stranger to blockchain technology as it may seem. While the agency wasn’t directly involved in developing the 3D replica of Mars, if it wasn’t for the data provided by NASA, the ‘Mars4‘ metaverse project wouldn’t have been possible.

Consequently, the main reason why NASA is against the use of its imagery/logo for merchandising purposes, especially as NFTs, is due to the laws. And as such, there is pretty much nothing that anyone can do about it.
